Senior citizens in the golden years have a strong sense of their limitations. They have moved past their mid-life crisis of trying to reclaim former years and activities. Their children are retiring and some have great-great grandchildren. The seniors who have a strong faith in Jesus Christ are looking forward to being with Him. I had the privilege of addressing a number of seniors yesterday at a chapel in one of the retirement communities in our city. I enjoyed visiting, singing, praying and looking at God’s word together with them. They chose the songs and we sang of the saving power of the old rugged cross, God’s mansion over the hilltop, and of the pearly gates being opened by the Lord allowing entrance to forever with Him. Some eyes have so dimmed over the years that even the large print is no longer readable. The songs etched in their minds and hearts came through their voices in fond memory and great hope. They are most aware that none of us lives forever on this side of eternity. Many are ready to pass from this life into the forever life to join their spouse who made their homecoming before them or to join other family members and friends. They look forward to being face to face with Jesus Christ with all those who have made Jesus their highest treasure while on this earth. They look forward to a new body that will never wear out or become contaminated with disease. They look forward to a new earth where God reigns with perfect justice, perfect decisions, perfect governance, perfect peace and perfect love. Malachi describes the joy of being released from the limitations of this life into the freedom of the forever life with the Lord. Malachi 4:2 But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall. Schedule time with a senior citizen and catch a fresh passion of what is waiting for those who love Jesus.
