God had Moses do some amazing miracles while leading the nation of Israel. People still resisted and rebelled against his leadership. I fall into the trap of thinking that if the Holy Spirit used me in miraculous ways, people would believe the good news I am sharing and would trust my leadership.
It did not happen to Moses and will not likely happen to you or me. God even told Moses and Joshua that the nation would rebel after Moses dies.
Deuteronomy 31:14-16
The Lord said to Moses, “Now the day of your death is near. Call Joshua and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, where I will commission him.” So Moses and Joshua came and presented themselves at the tent of meeting.
15 Then the Lord appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the cloud stood over the entrance to the tent. 16 And the Lord said to Moses: “You are going to rest with your ancestors, and these people will soon prostitute themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake me and break the covenant I made with them.
That must have been discouraging for both men to hear. Moses dies and Joshua has been told many times to be strong and courageous. Joshua has told the people that in three days they will cross the Jordon and take possession of the land God was giving them. The people answer with words that would discourage any leader.
Joshua 1:16-17
Then they answered Joshua, “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. Only may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses.
Joshua knew they did not fully obey Moses. They knew they did not fully obey Moses.
Whenever we are called to lead people through challenging circumstances and changes it is vital to be strong and courageous. Joshua did not back down, flinch, roll his eyes or throw in the towel. He led and amazing things happened.
I admire Moses and Joshua’s leadership through good times and terrible times. Whether you are leading a company, work team, ministry or family – be strong and courageous. Lead through the good, the goofy, the gooey and the glory times. Lead and watch God do amazing things.
