Sin and a Wet Basement

During the spring and summer, I mow the lawn at the farm I grew up. My mother still lives there and it is an opportunity to visit with her every week while playing Scrabble after mowing. Two weeks ago, I forgot to put the extensions on the rain gutter downspouts. Five inches of rain added to the already wet spring brought water seeping into her basement. The water never got more than three inches deep, but it covered the entire basement floor.  This is the first time water has ever covered the entire basement.

Morning and evening, I would Shop Vac the water up and dump it into the big cast iron wash sink. At its worse, I slurped up 275 gallons of water each time. My son brought over his Shop Vac which has an   attachment for a garden hose to pump the water away from the house so it was not overloading the septic.

It was dry for a couple days until three days of rain brought more water seeping in spite of the extensions being on the rain gutters. The ground is so saturated that any additional moisture is a problem.

Sin works in the same way. If we saturate our eyes, ears, and senses with sin, it will seep into every area of our lives. You can remove the sin. Your life can be clean and dry, but any additional temptations will soon result in sin seeping into your life.

Jesus is the only way to be spiritually clean and dry for good. I do not believe you can reach a state of sinless perfection, but I do believe you can sin less today than yesterday.

1 John 1:8-9 NIV
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

We knew this was where we wanted to put our focus, and our money, because of the leaks and concerns that led to our makeover. Shower came first, then everything else after we set the budget. Schluter was recommended to us by a number of contractors. After doing our homework, we came to the conclusion that a Schluter kit was the best option for us. There are a few more, but I have no idea what they are. I'll also make it plain that this isn't sponsored, so I'm free to tell you what I think of the Schluter kits, including the good, the bad, the good, the bad, and my honest opinion.

Water Damage Cleanup

Most people don't think about the possibility of their water property damage, but when it does happen, it's a big mess. If you're lucky, the water will recede on its own and you can start the cleanup process. But what if it doesn't? That's where a water damage cleanup service comes in. These services are designed to help get your property back to its original condition, or as close as possible.

Rain and snowmelt are the two main sources of basement water. A downpour can start with even a tiny storm. For instance, a 1,500 square foot roof on a home sheds 1,000 gallons of water for every inch of rain. Rising groundwater, which may even be fed by an underground spring, is the issue in more challenging situations. After building up around your foundation, water enters through cracks, gaps, and porous materials.

The extensions on the rain gutter downspouts are a great way to keep your gutters clean and free of debris. By extending the downspouts, you can ensure that water will flow freely and not become clogged with leaves and other debris. This will keep your gutters from overflowing and causing water damage to your home.
