Think about the last time you or a family member pulled out albums and with each turn of the page a rush of events captured in an image comes back in full memory. When the old black and white photo album is pulled out and children ask who this person is or where that home is, you are able to recall vivid details of things that occurred decades ago. It is amazing what you remember when reminiscing.
Remembering current things is not as vivid. Do you remember what you ate for supper last night, two nights ago, or how about last week? We do not fill our minds with daily routine stuff.
I believe it is essential for a person to read the Bible each day to deepen your relationship with God. Do you remember what you read last night or this morning? Do you remember what the message last Sunday was about?
I read the Bible each morning. Some days, I forget what I read within the hour. Sometimes I do not remember the Sunday message and I am the one that spoke the message!
Before you and I pummel ourselves with guilt, let us consider a couple things. Eating everyday is important for our physical health. It does not matter a whole lot that we remember what was on the menu, as long as it was healthy it will benefit your body. Feeding ourselves spiritually every day is important for our spiritual health. It is not absolutely essential that you remember every prayer or every verse you read; as long as it was healthy – meaning that it was done with a sincere heart and not a performance of duty or as a ritual.
I am trying to meditate throughout the day on the scripture I had read in the morning. This is a big help because it opens my eyes to see more God events throughout the day. This morning’s reading was from the book of Acts when Paul is on his way to Rome and a storm that lasted days assaulted the ship. I thought about it during my drive to town and when I get a second cup of coffee later in the morning. I think about people I know who have endured long storms in their lives and it invites me to pray for them.
Try recalling what you read this morning. Think of it as pulling out an album and taking a trip down memory lane.
Joshua 1:8
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
