This Saturday, the Minnesota fishing season begins. Most of the lakes in the northern third of our state may still have ice on them due to the late spring this year. The hard-core fishermen and women will be out on the lakes at 12:01am Saturday morning ready to make the first catch of the season. I enjoy fishing, but I am not a hard-core fisherman, so I will still be in bed at 12:01am. Jesus has called each of us get up, go out and fish for people. Matthew 4:19 “Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” I enjoy fishing for people. This morning in the weight room, a man who just found out I was a pastor guy, talked to me about a youth ministry he heard while listening to a Joyce Meyers broadcast. He had asked me where and what church I pastor and I had asked him if he had a home church. He shared he had been a long-time member of a church right in town. These are just casting out the line conversations. They open the door to questions about what Jesus means to them and how does a relationship with Him affect everyday life. There is a woman who has pushed Christ out of her life and I have been doing a little trolling to discover why. We work together four days each week. She believes in the writings and philosophy of a person that has a humanistic approach to life. I am still fishing with questions to understand what she believes, why she believes it and why she feels it is more meaningful than what Jesus extends to her. Fishing opener is a good reminder that Jesus calls you to fish for people. Get the equipment ready, keep casting the line of conversation out, sometimes you may be up until 12:01am asking and answering their questions about Jesus.
