Owning the land and working the land was an important theme of the show. Oliver struggled with equipment, often did his chores in a three piece suit, and his struggle to make things work on the farm. Farming with my father for thirteen years following high school, I could relate to the humor in Oliver’s struggles, challenges, and victories.
When Israel was freed from their slavery in Egypt, ended the forty years wandering in the desert and finally settling in to the land God promised to them, the land was an important part of their lives. The book of Numbers lists genealogies, population statistics and land boundaries of Israel for each of the tribes. It is a little difficult to get real excited while reading those stretches of scripture. As a record of history of Israel, it was very important.
God’s main purpose was not for them to be land owners and farmers. Beginning with Abraham and his family, God’s purpose was for their hearts to follow Him in their work, marriage, family, and community. God blessed and favored Israel because he loved them. God wanted them to pass their success to others. This includes spiritual blessings and material blessings. God blessed them to be a blessing to others.
Galatians 3:7-9
Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. 8 Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” 9 So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
Do you have dreams that you consider a destiny from God?
Do you sense God prospering you and favoring you in your pursuits?
Do you see ways that you can pass you success to others?
Are you passing on spiritual blessings to those around you?
Ephesians 1:3
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
