Public announcements, bulletin announcements, posts on the web-site, posters, social media posts and emails are passive forms of getting the message out. Even though it is passive, it is a necessary form. Our church has a great Murder Mystery Dinner which has been promoted for the past 30 days. I was surprised when I texted a friend to ask if he was going and he asked what it was, when it was and where it was. I had assumed he was informed, but all the communication was passive and for various reasons they did not make it on his radar.
Personally inviting through a text, phone call or face to face is an active form of communicating a need or an event. The person may have seen one or more of the passive announcements and was thinking about volunteering or attending. The personal contact allows questions to be asked and clarifying of the responsibilities or the details of the event. A personal contact lets the person know that they are important enough to have someone move beyond a passive announcement and actively invite their participation.
