Last night I had a dream about alligators. Not just about seeing them, they were after me! I got away and warned others about the terror. I woke up pondering what would make me dream about alligators in Minnesota in the middle of winter.
I believe God speaks to people today through His word - the Bible, through thoughts He gives us, through other people, through visions and through dreams. How does one know whether an alligator dream is from God or not?
1. You remember the dream. Many times, we wake up knowing we had a dream, but cannot remember anything else. When God sends a dream to us, He has us remember the dream.
So far, my alligator dream could be a message from God!
2. God gives a clear understanding of the dream. Throughout Scripture, whenever people had a dream, God made it clear what it was about. Joseph is told to marry, Mary. A pagan king has a dream and God has a Joseph or Daniel to tell them what it was about. The times when people were troubled because they did not have a clear understanding, God told them it would not be clear now, but later.
My alligator dream; Not a warning of a coming plague, nor a symbolic message of people behaving reptilian and attacking others. Because there was no clear understanding given by God or others, it was just a unique dream I happened to remember.
Let Psalms 16:6-8 be an encouragement for us:
6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
surely I have a delightful inheritance.
7 I will praise the LORD, who counsels me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
8 I have set the LORD always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
