1 Bible and 41000 Denominations

Christianity Today cited that there are 41,000 Christian denominations worldwide. Each denomination bases their beliefs on one single book, the Bible. Each denomination is not necessarily a different belief. Many are similar, but have a different form of church government or have a very, minor yet specific belief that makes them distinct. Some denominations are under the Christian category because they are not Buddist, Hindu or any of the other non-Christian religions, but in reality are not Christian in their faith.

What would be a good definition of Christian faith? The Nicene Creed has been used as a yardstick of correct Christian belief. The creed was first adopted in 325 and modified in 381 at the Council of Constantinople. Here is the version from 381:

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of all things visible and invisible.

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begotten of the Father [the only-begotten; that is, of the essence of the Father, God of God], Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father;

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds (æons), Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father;

By whom all things were made [both in heaven and on earth];

by whom all things were made;

Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down and was incarnate and was made man;

who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man;

He suffered, and the third day he rose again, ascended into heaven;

he was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried, and the third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father;

From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

from thence he shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead;
whose kingdom shall have no end.

And in the Holy Ghost.
And in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spake by the prophets.

In one holy catholic and apostolic Church; we acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Many of the 41,000 denominations would agree on either versions of this creed. There is a greater unity among them than what would appear when recognizing 41,000 different denominations.  Unity, not uniformity is the scriptural call for the church.

Ephesians 4:3-6
Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
